Student opportunities

We offer interested and motivated students the opportunity to do their master thesis or semester project (BSc work) within our group. Our research is centred around topics of plant-antagonist interactions, including both demographic and evolutionary studies. Our special interest is in linking questions of basic evolutionary and ecological process in plant populations with application in pest control management, and in conservation and restoration ecology.

In Switzerland, over the years, we have established strong links with colleagues from CABI Europe-Switzerland Centre in Delémont (Jura), the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research in Birmensdorf (WSL, Zürich), the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) in Frick and several of the Swiss Federal Research Stations Agroscope (Changins, Wädenswil, Reckenholz)  where numerous students have carried out parts of their practical work. Occasionally, master and bachelor theses can also been done in collaboration with our international partners.

The methods employed range from extended field surveys and field experiments within and across continents (presently in Europe, North America, Kenya and the Caucasus), over common garden and greenhouse experiments down to plant physiological and molecular marker studies in the laboratory (cf. our research projects).

Here, you find presently offered/ongoing BSc studies. For past and present MSc, PhD and PostDoc projects, please see under Researchgroup or my special alumni webpage.

The projects presently available are suggestions and the ongoing ones represent realized ideas in the frame of our general reserch objectives that can be adapted to accommodate your interests and strength. In recent years, we also hosted several visiting PhD students from Italy and Iran who carried out small independent research projects linked to our studies.

Please contact us for more information or to discuss your own ideas and suggestions.
