Postdoctoral Fellows (Biophysics)

The Biophysics Group (Prof. Michael Mayer) invites applications for Postdoctoral Fellows for three projects in the domains of single molecule characterization of proteins with nanopores, single molecule fluorescence techniques, or single molecule electrophysiology studies.  Our goal is to increase our understanding of neurodegenerative, amyloidogenic diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease by developing next generation protein analysis approaches that can reveal multiple protein descriptors on a single molecule level. Such a technology will make it possible to examine the aggregation state and kinetics of heterogeneous amyloid samples in human cerebrospinal fluid and peripheral blood.  We will then take advantage of this information to explore its potential for early diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring of amyloidogenic diseases.

Applicants must have a PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Biotechnology.  Previous experience with amyloid research, protein analysis and gel electrophoresis of proteins, electrophysiology or single molecule fluorescence techniques is a plus as is interest in computer programming for data analysis.  Strong motivation, previous research productivity, and enthusiasm for top-quality research as well as very good oral and written English communication skills are a must.  Since our research team is growing strongly, Postdocs will be expected to lead small research teams and guide PhD and Masters students in the lab.  Creativity and drive to explore their own original ideas are encouraged.
